DAY 3 & 4

CURRENT GOAL:

Choose A Gameplay Type

What Can You Create?

By far the biggest benefit of Buildbox is how easy it is to create games.  Our engine is the first of it’s kind that truly let’s anyone — regardless of technical skill — create something fun.  The way we did this is by creating the “infinity engine” inside Buildbox.

Today you’re going to learn what types of games the infinity engine lets you create, see a lot of games made with the software and then choose a base gameplay type for your new game.

Today’s Steps:

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

What Type of Games Can You Make?

How do you know if you can create a game type you like with Buildbox?  The easiest way is this:  If the game scrolls, then Buildbox can most likely create something very close to it.  Endless games are easier to make because there is less level design, but you can also created leveled style games with our checkpoint system.

This opens up the door a ton of different game types similar to dogfighting, simple jumping, complex jumping, air jumpingtop down racing, flappy, floatavoidancefinger avoidance, slide avoidance, touch-to-move avoidance, platform fall, float fall, side shooters, space shootersimpossible, runners, jumping runners, shooting runners, indie runners, bouncy motorextreme motor, downward platformers, hardcore platformers, adventure platformersjump platformersimple helicopter, complex helicopter, elevator platformers, downward bounce, sticky jump and more.  (Please note, this is an example of popular games with similar gameplay types, not a list of Buildbox created games.)

Of course you can easily mix and match gameplay types to create something totally unique.  For example Phases was initially a platformer, but we decided to add in a bouncing character to remove the need for a jump button.  Before Phases, this was not a popular gameplay type.

Get Some Inspiration

Now that you have an idea about the games you can create, let’s see what other games have been created with Buildbox.

In this short video you’ll see 15 different games created with Buildbox by customers and our team in the first 3 months of it’s release:

If you need more ideas for inspiration, then check out the most popular app stores and sort the top list by “games”.  Often times you can find Buildbox style games in the Action, Arcade, Adventure or Indie sections.

Some app stores we like are:

Choose A Gameplay Type

Now it’s time to decide what type of gameplay you will create.  We’ve given you two days for this section because it’s cornerstone of your game and we don’t want you to rush.  Spend this time to figure out a root type of gameplay you want your game to have.  We’ll discuss how to tweak your gameplay into something unique (by changing advanced gameplay settings) at a later time.

Also, don’t get to worried about what you decide because this could easily change in the future.  It’s very possible as your game progresses, you’ll decide to change the way a character jumps or how much gravity is in your game, and this is fine.  Even if you change gameplay styles completely, much of the level design and graphics might not need to be changed.
