Ableton works well if you've got instruments to use but for people wanting something all in one I usually recommend Reason by Propellerhead that has always been awesome but is now becoming a very powerful DAW especially now since other people can make plugins for it

To recommend Reason to a noob is like recommending an Arri camera to an amateur filmmaker. You simply won't understand a single button or slider and what it does. How many are there? Like 1 million probably. lol.

But really there is no way someone with no experience will use a software like that. Ever. This is for professional music creation, people with experience and a deep understanding how sound works. And you need external hardware as well to make this really work (I think but I might be wrong). At least a synth is a basic tool...

Buttonbass is more the thing you are looking for. Also, try libraries that already exists. There are very good ones out there. Also some userbased Online communities like http://www.freesound.org. And what you can do is mix them in a simple editing program together to create new sounds.

If you are looking for something very nice to make Sound FX, check out: http://www.bfxr.net/

Also, the search function of the forum is your friend:

I use GarageBand from Apple as a free alternative, and have SoundBox too but I had some issues with that latter one. The cool thing about SoundBox though is that it is not only for music but also UI and other SFX sounds like explosion effects. But creating musc I would def go for GarageBand if you do not want to spend too much, especially if you have a keyboard or guitar and you want to add a real touch to your sounds.
