Someone else made me aware of this, but Apple features every week at least one pixel style game.

Everyone has forgotten about Cellshading and dynamic rendering (I gotta represent) :) This rendering style is few and far between in the app store.

I have not forgotten about it but to learn your skills would take me at least 5 years... so I'm going rather with something like this:

What's this style cold nowadays? MM (Minimal-Meme)?

I see less and less this style these days but with a funny animation and game play it could work

This style is very hard to balance/produce correctly. Think of it this way; Retro graphic will always be associated with the "Old School" and the minimal style of graphic design/artdirecton which could go out of style at any moment.

Cell shading Is an evergreen (never goes out of style) form of rendering.
The App store's biggest hits (consistently) have been dynamically and/or cell shaded including:

    • Angry Birds 91nsO1HTYxL.png
    Plants Vs Zombies: pvz1_ss6.jpg

    And Jetpack Joy Ride:

These games have been popular for over a decade. We need to future proof our games.

Indeed.. These are some beautiful games and of course for cell shading uou would need a lot of time and a professional artist.... But for us indies we do most of our own work... So.:)..

Retro, minimal, modern.. all graphics are awesome if you will use them in right place and in right game type. Some people say that retro graphics are too old and people don't want to play them anymore but Swoopy Space can be good example to say that this expression is wrong. If you say that minimal graphics are too simple you should check out The Line Zen. Firstly your game idea should be great only then you should think about which graphic type you want to use ( retro, minimal, modern ).
