Is it a good idea to publish just before Halloween?

 

Hmmmm... Interesting question. I don't think it matters really. Games do Halloween updates and devs rush to get bad Halloween clones to the store. Any different than releasing before Christmas?

Would love to hear you thoughts on this, I'm no where near as knowledgeable as I want to be on these matters. Really just stoked we have made it this far. cheers

 

I wouldn't say DARTHY looks particularly designed to be a spooky Halloween game. However, it may get featured under the halloween collection if Apple thinks it looks Halloween-ish.
To me, DARTHY is more of a fresh new game that is also a love letter to the original nes Metroid game where the player had to escape the explosive underground area after beating the "mother brain" character. The similarity between the music during that escape and the music in Darthy is definitely there, which I take as a head nod to honoring the retro aesthetic of metroid. However, Darthy appears to be more of a tale of self-discovery and heroism, not just escape from a hospital ... I am itching to see if we'll get to beat up some space pirates

I have no idea either and yes, it's a possibility that Apple features the game in the selection just because it's a dark theme. But if not, it could be a problem and can be forgotten between all the Halloween spirit (and chaos). That would be a shame. I suppose it's like to toss a coin. Honestly, after that much work I wouldn't take the risk as an indie developer as I wouldn't either publish on Christmas. The big players have too much money to spend trying to take advantage of these special dates. I also would love to hear other opinions on this as it is a very interesting question for myself.

 

I think Darthy is worth releasing now in its own right, just as a game. It is a neat game, and I don't think it needs halloween to be a hit.
Besides, I have a hunch that @Collin Wade Thiessen is publishing with a publisher

How long did it take to build the whole game out, it looks VERY deep and complex. Looks too awesome. I really want to play it!

It has been a long part time thing on and off with my kids (9months). It really is just a simple platformer that slowly gets harder and harder. Theme is dark! Can't wait for BB2 to continue the story.

@dark_dragon_blade_ it is going to be free on mobile / appletv but paid on steam/mac/pc

Why is everybody talking about appletv? Is this automatically supported when it comes out?
