Anyone have some guidelines for creating a sustainable app business? If you do have one or have had one for a while what was it that got you there? Did you focus on one thing and do it well? What books or other resources were integral to your success? How about people you met who mentored you?
Hey, I've been running Realmac Software for well ten years now, so I have a little experience in running a sustainable app business ;-) However, I've mainly built apps (not games) so my advice and guidance is skewed a little more towards that. I've been writing articles sharing some of the things I've learnt over on my blog: http://dancounsell.com Anyways, I've put together a page with my most popular relevant posts on App Store marketing (they are not really game focused so your millage may vary): http://dancounsell.com/app-store-marketing-tips Hope you find them useful, and let me know if you have any questions! Thanks, Dan
Thanks for sharing, Dan. I studied your launch of Clear a LOT when it was number one. Glad to have you here.
Hi Dan, Thank you for sharing. I just had a look at your website. I read the article about reviews and I absolutely agree. Half a year ago I thought that maybe it would not be the best practice to show e.g. a dialogue and ask the user for a review. I thought that maybe Apple or Google might not like this. When I had a meeting with Google I met some of their experts and we discussed this as well. To my surprise they even recommended to do this! The right moment (positive event) and the filter (Did you like our app/game?) are important as well.
Dan, Thanks for this, what a great resource, plan on reading more today. BTW, I still use clear on my phone, great app! Alain Grignon zHeroez Founder
I have been running Appsonite for 4 years now, so it is possible. For a one man show its important to be flexible. In addition to developing for my own portfolio I have done some app development for third party business as well. This has saved my cash flow many times. And regarding Dan Counsell, cool to see you here. I have been following your blog for some time. In particular I have been studying your launch strategies, which I plan to borrow some strategies when I roll out my next app launch.
